Weekly Recap: January 8, 2024

January 15, 2024

This was the first week of introducing all the new systems and kicking off CRA for 5th grade! I have to say, it went really well. We were both respectful of each other's time - he realized I have to plan my time so that I can also support my clients and projects - and I realized it isn't easy for him to abruptly stop what he's doing and shift into school. We navigated it well.

That said, our days are very busy. Here's a look at what a general weekly calendar looks like for times out of the house:

In other words, our mornings are spent out of the house. Fridays are "Field Trip Fridays" and therefore are out of the house too. We're home in time for lunch and then have a bit of independent time.

At 1:30, he has a daily mentorship session from the office where he is focusing on his Pursuit of Passion - 3d Video Game Development. Then a short break.... before we do CRA.

For CRA this week we completed Math everyday with a focus on the start of algebra. Adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing with negative numbers. Exponentiation. And, moving things around in an equation to isolate a variable. It was fun!

We also began his novel study which is Wonder. We've decided to do audiobook this year which really allowed him to engage deeply with the plot. We had a great discussion after the first 30 minutes and will continue the book next week.

We didn't get to science and history. But, we did do a LOT of work on ARFID. This week the focus was on food-words (last week we covered the word Food itself). Along the way he realized that he is only eating 7% of his available "comfortable foods" and is interested in adding more of them back into his rotation.

For assignments this week, he submitted his ARFID work which was a crossword puzzle that I created to engage him in food-related words. And, he recorded a video of himself explaining a trick he discovered that helps him with his 8's multiplication facts. He has always struggled to memorize multiplication facts but has woken up several days this week having figured out patterns that make it easier for his brain to recall them!!

From Edison, "AMAZING! Now I can do my 8s table EZ!"
